Route

Day 1: Marseille – 18:00

Marseille, the oldest city of France, was founded in 600 BC by Greeks from Phocaea as a trading port under the name Massalia. Nowadays it is the most populous French commune after Paris and is the centre of the third largest metropolitan area in the country. To the east, starting in the small fishing village of Callelongue on the outskirts of Marseille and stretching as far as Cassis, are the Calanques, a rugged coastal area interspersed with small fjords. Further east still are the Sainte-Baume, a 1,147 m (3,763 ft) mountain ridge rising from a forest of deciduous trees, the town of Toulon and the French Riviera. To the north of Marseille, beyond the low Garlaban and Etoile mountain ranges, is the 1,011 m (3,317 ft) Mont Sainte Victoire. To the west of Marseille is the former artists’ colony of l’Estaque; further west are the Côte Bleue, the Lion Gulf and the Camargue region in the Rhône delta.

Day 2: Ajaccio 08:00 – 19:00

It is a city where one sees easily the pride of the people who live here and whose history is relatively recent but yet very rich in significant events. Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the cathedral of San Sabino (1035–1171) and the Castello Svevo of Frederick II, which is now also a major nightlife district. To the south is the Murattiano section, the modern heart of the city, which is laid out on a rectangular gird-plan with a promenade on the sea, and the major shopping district (the via Sparano and via Argiro).

Day 3: Olbia 08:00 – 19:00

Although the area around Olbia has been inhabited since the 8th century BC, the town was not actually founded until the 6th century BC. The Carthaginians decided on the location because of the natural harbour which created excellent access to Italy. Located in the Mediterranean on the island of Sardinia in Italy, Olbia serves as a main connection between Sardinia and the Italian peninsula. The Church of St Paolo, dating from the 17th century, boasts its Gallurese style and is worth visiting. The surrounding area is filled with an array of old, beautiful houses and exquisite buildings. Remains from the Roman era, the citys defence wall and famous thermal baths can also be seen in this part of the town. Another must-see church is the Church of San Simplicio, which is the oldest and the most important religious landmark in the Gallura region.
