Questions to Ask When Cruising With Kids

There is nothing better than a cruise, when it comes to multi-generational family vacations. Cruises are like a big “all-inclusive resort”, except they move across the water, providing new vistas each day for everyone. However, before getting your family onboard, you should probably take into consideration the fact that some cruise lines do design activities for kids, while other don’t! Therefore here are some basic questions you should ask your travel agent or cruise line when selecting a cruise for a family with children.

Basics

What are the age restrictions for the cruise line?

Do my children’s ages qualify them for a discount?

Does the Web site and/or brochure of the cruise line feature children in the pictures? (If not, it’s probably not designed for kids.)

Are the special activities and child care/teen center available at the time we wish to cruise?

Will my children find the ports of call interesting? If not, is there enough to keep them happy on the ship?

Are discounts available for a 3rd and/or 4th person in our cabin?

If there a special place or playroom dedicated for children? For teens?

Cabins

Are cribs and/or day beds or cots available to put in our room? If so, is there a rental fee?

Are adjoining cabins available? (If you have a BIG or extended family)

How big are the cabins?

Are guardrails available for bunk beds?

Dining

Does the menu offer food my children will eat?

If not, are pizza and burgers and hot dogs and such available?

Is there a children’s menu available for each meal?

Is early seating available or does the ship have “open” seating so that we can eat at a time close to when the children normally dine?

Activities

What activities are planned for children?

Is there a children’s-only pool available on the ship?

Will there be special movies or live entertainment that children will enjoy?

Are there any shore excursions scheduled that are geared toward children?

Is there a babysitting service available?

What are the hours and costs for the babysitting service?

Child Care Center or Teen Center

What are the requirements for placing a child in the center such as age, vaccinations, or potty training?

How are the children’s areas supervised? Is the teen center supervised?

What are the hours, costs, and restrictions on the centers?

What security methods are used when a child is picked up from the center?

What is the ratio of children to adult staff in the children’s center?

How are the staff trained in the children’s center? Do they know how to perform CPR on children and infants?

Are the staff working in the children’s center insured?

Carnival Back in Europe in 2011

Carnival Cruise Lines will be back in Europe in 2011, according to Carnival’s Senior Cruise Director John Heald.

Carnival intend to reclaim the Old Continent with its currently under-construction 130,000-ton, 3,690-passenger Carnival Magic. The new ship will sail a nine-night cruise from Venice to Barcelona on May 1. It will then remain in Barcelona until October, offering 18 seven, nine and 12-night cruises.

Cruise prices start from 665 Euros per person for a seven-night cruise and 861 Euros for a 12-night voyage. Prices for the inaugural Venice – Barcelona cruise open at 723 Euros per person.

Carnival UK and Ireland managing director Lynn Narraway said the cruise-only prices would allow agents to package the cruises with flights and land-based options, as well as air-inclusive packages. “It’s the first time we have cruised from Barcelona and it’s easy for agents to either add time in the city, the beach, or at PortAventura theme park.”

Carnival Magic is actually under construction at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard in Trieste, Italy. The second Carnival’s Dream class ship will resemble a lot its Carnival Dream sister ship. The new boat will include a 11,250-square-foot adults-only Serenity area, a Seaside Theatre, a massive “Cloud 9″ spa, a WaterWorks aqua park with a 303-foot-long, four-deck-high corkscrew waterslide, and special family cabins designed to accommodate five passengers.

Going on a cruise for the first time can be daunting. The first thing to be aware of is that a cruise doesn’t have to cost you your life savings. Don’t forget, the price includes food, accommodation, day- and night-time entertainment, gym membership, kids clubs and flights. It doesn’t usually include spa treatments or shore excursions. Plus, early booking discounts are available. In many cases cruises are a more affordable option than land-based holidays.

Once you’ve set your budget, it’s important to decide what you want from your cruise. The variety of cruises available is staggering, from mini cruises and world cruises to Caribbean, Mediterranean, Baltic, Alaskan and Antarctic cruises, and they cater for a much greater range of holidaymakers than the ‘newly wed or nearly dead’ cliché would have you believe.

If you’re traveling as a couple, you’re going to have a different set of priorities to those holidaying as a family or in their retirement. Likewise, if you’ve only got a few days to spare, you’re going to want a completely different experience to those lucky cruisers who have entire months at their disposal. The beauty of the cruise holiday is that there’s something for everyone.

We’ve divided our recommendations into traveler type (families, couples, older cruisers, the time-rich and the time-poor) and your interests (adventure, culture, sun and getting to know a port). Here’s our guide to choosing the best cruise based on your traveler type:

For families

Families are brilliantly catered for on cruises,and we don’t just mean the food.

When it comes to choosing a ship, the basic rule is ‘the bigger the better’. The larger ships have kids clubs, babysitting services, multiple dining options and all kinds of activities for all ages, from spas and golf driving ranges for mum and dad, to swimming pools and climbing walls for all the family. Kids are so well taken care of that you could easily go for days without seeing them! And the environment on cruise ships is safe and contained enough that there’s absolutely no need to worry.

The best routes for families are in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, where the warm weather means kids can make the most of on-board swimming pools and outdoor activities.

For couples

As a couple you can be as sociable or as coupley as you choose. Obviously there are plenty of other people to mix with and the unique cruise liner atmosphere means it’s easy to get talking over a formal dinner or while taking part in dance classes or team games such as volleyball. When you’re feeling romantic, you can indulge in some pampering for twosomes or enjoy the view from your private balcony.

You can also get married on board – the captain can legally marry you! The only criterion is that you must be in a port or no more than 5km (3 miles) from land. Most cruise liners will sort the whole ceremony out for you, including photo albums. There might even be a few upgrades in it for you. The most romantic destinations are the Caribbean, for honeymoon-standard white-sand beaches and colourful rum cocktails, and Alaska for snuggling up in front of jaw-dropping views of mountains and glaciers and a spot of whale watching.

For older cruisers

A more traditional cruise suits the older traveller. A mid-sized ship is cosier, cheaper and you can explore ashore by day and enjoy some on-board entertainment in the evening. You usually have to dress for dinner and can choose a child-free ship.

Top destinations for older cruisers include the fjords of Norway, northern Europe and the Baltic. Retired travellers might also find the time for a round-the-world cruise taking in the delights of the Far East, Europe and the Americas (see For time-rich cruisers below).

For time-poor cruisers & time-rich cruisers

Cruises don’t have to mean endless days at sea. Mini cruises are becoming more and more popular with time-famished holidaymakers. They’re also a great, non-committal way to get a taster of what a cruise is all about, so perfect for first-time cruisers. Mini cruises generally last four to five days and include all the usual on-board entertainment but you get more for your money than you would with a land-based holiday as you usually visit two to three destinations in that time.

You can cruise to destinations in the Baltic, France, Spain and Channel Islands directly from the UK, or fly to ports in the Caribbean or Spain and Italy for Mediterranean mini cruises.

Lucky, lucky time-rich travellers! A round-the-world cruise is the ultimate in cruising. Usually lasting anywhere from four weeks to three months, these cruises take in just about every type of destination you can think of. A typical trip, starting in the UK might take you across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and USA, through the Panama Canal to a few ports in South America before cruising on to some South Pacific islands, including Hawaii, then on to the New Zealand and Australia. Asia comes next, followed by Africa or the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean. Of course, you can do this in the opposite direction or join a cruise for just a section. Themed cruises, such as visiting Commonwealth countries, are also available.

A world cruise is a hassle-free way to experience plenty of different cultures without having to deal with the hassles of airport check in, lost luggage or arranging your own transport. One thing worth asking is how long the ship stays in each port – with all that time at sea you’ll need more than one day on land at a time.

If you’re more into sun bathing and relaxation, you’re going to want a different cruise experience to those who want to check out museums and galleries or walk across glaciers. Likewise, if you love luxury, you’re going to be happier on a cruise ship that pampers and takes care of every little detail for you. Or perhaps you’re not yet convinced that a cruise is for you and want to combine a cruise with a more traditional land-based holiday. For adventure

Antarctica, the most remote place on earth, is the destination for you. An Antarctic cruise is an entirely different experience from any other cruise. There’s no shopping or eating in luxury restaurants. Instead, you’ll be taken ashore in a zodiac (inflatable boat) to walk among penguins, check out seal colonies or take a dip in the thermal waters of Deception Island. There are also stunning iceberg formations, vistas of glaciated mountains and whales to watch from the ship.

For culture

For museums, galleries and an unparalleled sense of history, it’s got to be the Mediterranean. Athens, Rome, Barcelona, Florence, Dubrovnik, Venice: the concentration of culture is unbeatable. To experience something a bit different, choose a route that takes in South America and the Panama Canal. The place is simply bursting with colonial buildings, crumbling fortresses and brightly coloured birds all set against a jungle backdrop. And of course, there’s the incredible feat of engineering that is the canal itself.

For sun

White-sand beaches, clear blue seas and laid-back island attitude make Caribbean cruises some of the most popular around. Most cruises leave from Florida for a trip filled with sunshine, cocktails and fun.

You can choose to play at being Robinson Crusoe on apparently deserted islands such as Nevis or Barbuda, soak up some history in the colonial plantations of Antigua or explore the underwater shipwrecks of Grand Cayman. The Greek islands are a great alternative.

For the destination port

Cruises only allow you to stay and explore a place for one day, possibly two. For some people, that really isn’t long enough to get to know a destination as well as they’d like to. Many cruise companies now operate fly, cruise and stay trips where you can combine a cruise with a lengthier stay in a destination of your choice. You can spend a week or more before or after your cruise discovering all a place has to offer in far more depth than you’d be able to on a regular cruise. For example, you could fly to New York, spend a week checking out the sights before taking a transatlantic cruise back via Ponta Delgada on the Azores and the Canary Islands, or do the same in Singapore or Hong Kong before sailing off around the Indian Ocean.

Route

Day 1: Seattle – 16:00

United States border, it is named after Chief Seattle, of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. The encompassing Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan statistical area is the 15th largest in the United States, and the largest in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. A major economic, cultural and educational center in the region, Seattle is the county seat of King County. Since the 90s, Seattle exploded in all directions. It attracts many young people, while exporting its trends – economic dynamism with Boeing and Microsoft, grunge music, fitness, outdoor sports – all testifying to a great vitality.

Day 2: Inside Passage

The Inside Passage of the Alaska Panhandle and coastal British Columbia is a coastal route for oceangoing vessels along a series of passages between the mainland and the coastal islands. Ships using the route can avoid some of the bad weather in the open ocean, and visit the many isolated communities along the route.

The Alaskan portion of the Inside Passage, in the north, extends 500 miles (800 km) from north to south and 100 miles (160 km) from east to west. The area encompasses 1,000 islands, 15,000 miles (24,000 km) of shoreline and thousands of coves and bays. British Columbia’s southern portion of the route is of similar extent, with up to 25,000 miles (40,000 km) of coastline, and includes the narrow, protected Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland, the Johnstone and Queen Charlotte Straits between Vancouver Island and the mainland, as well as a short stretch along the wider and more exposed Hecate Strait near the Queen Charlotte Islands, though from Fitz Hugh Sound northwards the route is sheltered via the various large islands in that area such as Princess Royal Island and Pitt Island (Canada).

Day 3: Juneau 14:00 – 22:00

The City and Borough of Juneau is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the

panhandle of the U.S. state of Alaska. It has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of the then-Alaska Territory was moved from Sitka.

The municipality unified in 1970 when the City of Juneau merged with the City of Douglas and the surrounding borough to form the current home rule municipality.The area of Juneau is larger than that of Rhode Island and Delaware individually and almost as large as the two states combined. Downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island. There’s an awful lot to do in Juneau. Chances are, you’ll have trouble figuring out exactly where to start.

Day 4: Skagway 07:00 – 21:00

A place exists in Alaska where the past lives on, where the cries of “gold in the Yukon” still echo from steep canyon walls, where the sounds of barroom pianos and boomtown crowds ring out in the night. A place where the romance and excitement of yesteryear linger around every street corner, every bend in the trail. That place is Skagway!

Day 5: Glacier Bay

Glacier Bay is a bay in south-eastern Alaska, United States. It runs north northwest to south south-east for about 105 km (65 miles) between two pinchets of Alaska. It ranges from 5-30 km (3-20 miles) wide. Glacier Bay and the surrounding land is the site of the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.

Glacier Bay stands at farthest possible remove from the tiresome clamor of the modern world. So, at least for a little while, trade in your cell phone’s jangle for the pop, crackle, and finally thunderous boom of a building-size berg calving into the sea from a vast river of ice. Swap rivers of commuter traffic for a whitewater ride down North America’s wildest rivers, the Tatshenshini and Alsek. Whatever you do here — and choices range from sea kayaking to fishing for mammoth halibut to keeping an eye peeled for ambling bears or breaching humpback whales — you’ll be adventuring far beyond the end of the road.

Day 6: Ketchikan 06:00 – 13:30

Ketchikan is a city in Ketchikan Gateway Borough, Alaska, United States, and the southeasternmost sizable city in that state. Ketchikan is named after Ketchikan Creek, which flows through the town. Ketchikan comes from the Tlingit name for the creek, Kitschk-hin, the meaning of which is unclear. It may mean “the river belonging to Kitschk”; other accounts claim it means “Thundering Wings of an Eagle.” The Misty Fjords National Monument is one of the area’s major attractions.

Day 7: Victoria,BC,Canada 18:00 – 00:00

Among the highlights here are Butchart Gardens, one of the world’s best known horticultural attractions.

Day 1: Fort Lauderdale – 17:00

Day 1: Sharm El Sheikh

It is a city situated on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, in South Sinai Governorate, Egypt, on the coastal strip between the Red Sea and Mount Sinai. Surrounded by a vast and arid desert, Sharm El Sheik has one of the richest tropical seas of the world in terms of variety and concentration of marine life. Watersports, scooba activities, excellent climate throughtout the year, amusements and excursions make Sharm el Sheik an ideal holiday spot for tutti!

Port Said is a city in Egypt, the entry point of the Suez Canal by the Mediterranean. It is situated on one bank of the canal. The origins of Port Said is that of a working camp founded in 1859 by Said Pasha to house men working on the Suez Canal. By the late 19th century, it was an important port where all the major maritime powers had consulates. Much of the city was built on a section of Lake Manzala which was reclaimed by landfill. It is one of the most beautiful cities of Egypt. There are many old houses with large balconies on each floor. Its twin city, Port Fouad (Bur Fouad) is located on the eastern bank of the Canal and it is accessible by free ferry.

Heraklion is the major city and capital of the largest Greek island, Crete. Its Archaeological Museum holds the remains of the 3000-year old Minoan civilization, which grew aroud the nearby legendary palace of Knossos (of Minotaur fame), as well as Byzantine churches and a well-preserved Venetian wall and fortress from the 15th century.

Day 6: Katakolon 10:00 – 18:00

Katakolon is a seaside town in western Ilia in the municipality of Pyrgos. The town center is within a gulf overlooking the Ionian Sea. Katakolon is situated on a peninsula and has a lighthouse in the southwest, which was first opened in 1865.

Katakolon is considered to be a gateway to Olympia, where the ancient Greeks flocked every four years for more than a millennium to celebrate the sacred games dedicated to Zeus. You can visit the ruins of the Sanctuary, with its athletic quadrangles, stadium, temples and treasuries. The Archaeological Museum, a treasure house of Archaic, Classical and Roman sculptures, including the famous Niki Winged Victory are just some of the other sites one can enjoy while being in Katakolon.

No other city comes close. It may no longer be caput mundi (capital of the world), but Rome is an epic, bubbling-over metropolis harbouring lost empires. One visit and you’ll be hooked. Rome has a glorious monumentality that it wears without reverence. Its architectural heirlooms are buzzed around by car and Vespa as if they were no more than traffic islands.
The city bombards you with images: elderly ladies with dyed hair chatting in Trastevere; priests with cigars strolling the Imperial Forums; traffic jams around the Colosseum; plateloads of pasta in Piazza Navona; sinuous trees beside the Villa Borghese; barrages of pastel-coloured scooters revving up at traffic lights as if preparing for a race.

Day 9: Marseille 14:00

Marseille, the oldest city of France, was founded in 600 BC by Greeks from Phocaea as a trading port under the name Massalia. Nowadays it is the most populous French commune after Paris and is the center of the third largest metropolitan area in the country. To the east, starting in the small fishing village of Callelongue on the outskirts of Marseille and stretching as far as Cassis, are the Calanques, a rugged coastal area interspersed with small fjords. Further east still are the Sainte-Baume, a 1,147 m (3,763 ft) mountain ridge rising from a forest of deciduous trees, the town of Toulon and the French Riviera. To the north of Marseille, beyond the low Garlaban and Etoile mountain ranges, is the 1,011 m (3,317 ft) Mont Sainte Victoire. To the west of Marseille is the former artists’ colony of l’Estaque; further west are the Côte Bleue, the Gulf of Lion and the Camargue region in the Rhône delta.

The historic center of Florence continues to attract millions of tourists each year and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. Florence is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and its artistic[7], historic and cultural heritage and impact in the world remain vast up to this day.

The origins of this extraordinary historical and cultural center, whose culinary and musical traditions have been exported around the world are rather old. According to legend, the city of Naples’ origins are rooted in the myth of the Siren Parthenope (”of the voice of virgins”). Her body washed up on the shore of nearby Megaride, a tiny island in the Bay of Naples, was found by the locals, who respectfully interred her remains in Mount Echia, now the hill of Pizzofalcone. Dominated by Mount Vesuvius, whose smoking headdress plumes every corner of the city and each illustration, which represents it represents, Naples is undoubtedly a very exciting city, both because of its geographical position and the abundance of historical artifacts and monuments. Vesuvius is the only active volcano in mainland Europe, and has produced some of the continent’s largest volcanic eruptions. Located on Italy’s west coast, it overlooks the Bay and City of Naples and sits in the crater of the ancient Somma volcano. Vesuvius is most famous for the 79 AD eruption which destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Third city of Tunisia after Tunis and Sfax, Sousse owes its status as the undoubted capital of the region to these assets :

* An olive grove stretching over more than 2,500 square kilometers, constituting one of its main riches since Antiquity;
* A busy port, open to the town center and giving a touch of happiness to its activity;
* A medina of great historical interest, surrounded by its fortifications, which continues to live at its own rhythm, harmoniously contrasting with the modern city of typically Mediterranean charm;

Smaller and quieter than its neighbor Mallorca, Menorca (Minorca) is the second largest of the Balearic islands. The blue and white island has preserved its wild charm as the rocks of the north coast, rugged and battered by frequent blow “Tramuntana” seem inhabited for miles. The beaches in the South of Menorca, migjorn, of white sand, are mostly surrounded by pine woods with rich vegetation. The northern coast, la tramuntana, is steeper, with rocks, of great beauty. Mahón, the capital, is probably the liveliest place on the island. In the area called Anden Poniente, close to the port, you will be able to enjoy all kind of local restaurants, cafeterias, bars, locals with live music and discotheques. Day 8: Marseille – 09:00

Marseille, the oldest city of France, was founded in 600 BC by Greeks from Phocaea as a trading port under the name Massalia. Nowadays it is the most populous French commune after Paris and is the centre of the third largest metropolitan area in the country. To the east, starting in the small fishing village of Callelongue on the outskirts of Marseille and stretching as far as Cassis, are the Calanques, a rugged coastal area interspersed with small fjords. Further east still are the Sainte-Baume, a 1,147 m (3,763 ft) mountain ridge rising from a forest of deciduous trees, the town of Toulon and the French Riviera. To the north of Marseille, beyond the low Garlaban and Etoile mountain ranges, is the 1,011 m (3,317 ft) Mont Sainte Victoire. To the west of Marseille is the former artists’ colony of l’Estaque; further west are the Côte Bleue, the Lion Gulf and the Camargue region in the Rhône delta.
